Grandma’s Latkes


Ever wonder how your grandmother made those amazing latkes? Latkes are a traditional holiday delicacy that are always made around Hanukkah and made of potato. There is nothing better on a cold winter day than a warm latke with a side of applesauce. Below is a great recipe that won’t be quite the same as grandma’s but it might come close. Enjoy!

Ingredients: (Makes 4 Servings)

  • 3 cups shredded potato
  • 1/4 cup grated onion
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 6 saltine crackers, or as needed, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil, or as needed


  1. In a large bowl mix the potato, onion, eggs, crackers, salt, and pepper
  2. Fill a skillet about ½-inch deep with vegetable oil
  3. Place the skillet on a burner with medium-high heat
  4. Place spoonfuls of the potato mixture into the hot oil
  5. Using a spatula delicately flatten the latkes into the oil so they are even in thickness
  6. Cook in oil until each latke is browned and crisp, 3-5 minutes per side
  7. Place latkes on a plate lined with a paper towel to soak up extra and unwanted oil
  8. Enjoy!
